1) Summer school on Romani Music (May 25 -30, 2026);

This one-week course will be organized in the framework of the Khamoro Romani Festival, at the Faculty of Humanities, Charles University, Prague, and is intended for local and international university students.
The summer school is set to be organized in-person.

Course Details
In the morning lectures, students will become acquainted with the main areas in which Roma participated in the creation of distinctive music styles, this year, with a specific focus on the music of Central European Roma and Roma from the Balkans (including a transnational perspective). Moreover, we will discuss methodological and representational considerations, connected with research of and with Romani musicians. These discussions will reveal more general features of minorities’ music(s). Film screenings and workshop with Romani musicians will be held in the afternoons. In the evenings, students will attend festival concerts.

The course will be led by prof. Zuzana Jurková, FHS UK, with guest lecturer Prof. Margaret Beissinger, Princeton University, and prof. Carol Silverman, University of Oregon, USA.

2) Summer school Music from Nature (June 1 - 5, 2026);

Course details
A five-day seminar for students at all levels on how to listen to the sounds (not only) of nature, how to understand them, how to build a relationship with our environment—and perhaps even how to make music with the sounds and structures of the natural world. We will review the music and writings of others who have worked in this way, and go out in the field listening with our ears, and our technologies, then return to the classroom and studio to work in our own diverse ways, culminating in an informal performance for the group and for the public.
The course will be taught by prof. Zuzana Jurková, and Dr. Oldřich Poděbradský, FHS UK.
