Annotation

The aim of the course is to prepare current and future court translators and interpreters, including those who already hold, or intend to apply for, a court translator's or court interpreter's licence, sufficiently in terms of professional legal knowledge and language skills so that they can perform their services competently and to the highest professional standard. During their studies, they will acquire a basic knowledge of Czech law, including an orientation in basic Czech legal regulations. Emphasis is also placed on introducing the specifics of Czech law, the correct interpretation of which is crucial for meaningful translation into a foreign language (i.e. the language of a different legal system). The course is also open to foreigners living in the Czech Republic so that they can supplement their knowledge of the Czech language with basic knowledge of Czech law and Czech legal terminology. At the same time, it can serve as an introduction to Czech law for all those who wish to get an elementary idea about it.

Results of learning

Knowledge (theoretical/factual): the graduate will acquire basic knowledge of the system of Czech law, its individual branches and the basic principles on which the law is based. The student is able to analyse a Czech legal text in order to translate its meaning into a foreign language. Skills (practical/functional): the graduate is able to identify the main legal-linguistic characteristics that need to be translated into a foreign language in order to preserve the meaning of the source message. The student can apply the acquired knowledge of Czech legal terminology. The student can search for legal formulations in legal regulations and correctly match them with formulations used in legal jargon or in individual text types. Competence: The graduate is able to use his/her knowledge and skills in such a way that the output of his/her translation or interpreting activity is a high-quality translation that mediates the most accurate transfer of legal information between the source and target languages and the legal systems, one of which is Czech and Czech law.
